September 22, 2012, without planning to come back to my hometown, I eventually
did. It was time when my mother usually goes home and then I asked to go along
with her. In a good way, she smiled. We are travelling almost 3 hours. When
were finally at home, without a doubt, I first interviewed y grandfather. He is
88 years old. I first asked him about their entertainment before. It was just
like this, when he was yet a teenager, he usually go to house of his peers to
jam with them. “Gitarang Bagol” is
what they’re using before. His favorite love song are “Taghoy sa Siloy” “Kalaay
ning Kabus Kong Kahimtang Karon” “Honeymoon in Valley”. When it comes to disco
music, he likes “Misorka and Charles”. Every place when they know that there
has a disco, they didn’t miss to go there even it was really far. They
sacrifice their efforts and released sweat in their body. There is no
electricity before so they used “Petromax”. A Petromax lamp is a brand
name for a pressure lamp. Fuel, usually kerosene but sometimes white gasoline
or alcohol is kept in a container at the bottom. The air space above the fuel
is pressurized to drive the fuel up a pipe to a hot "generator" near
the top of the lamp. In the generator it vaporizes and passes through a venture
where it draws in and mixes with air. The fuel burns inside a mesh of mixed
metal oxides which glow white as a result .Amplifier,
all it does is makes a buzzing noise and
there’s a big loud “boom” coming from the speakers when it is turned. The sound disappears instantly so it's no big deal really. Big Trumpet
was also been used, usually they tie the big trumpet in the coconut tree by the
time they are using so that not only in the particular place can hear the music
for bayle but also in many other places that not so far in distance. It seems
give to the other place so that they
know where is the location. Only Saturday when they have a time to make fun of
themselves, can jam with their friends.
Monday to Friday is working days and they filled those days most in
their farm and pasture their animals. They bear it in mind that only Saturday
is their free time to give relaxation to each individual. He usually goes in
Pinamongahan Cebu to see the bands while playing different love songs. As I
asked him about what’s his favorite band, he sighed and replied that he can’t
remember it no more. My grandfather partly mentioned his favorite boxer and has
the name of Elorde. He takes effort to go to the Cebu, City coliseum just to
watch the boxing. And when I asked him about the fare, he said that it was only
1.00 from Tuburan to Cebu.
Turning to next question, what devices they are using when they want to
communicate their family, friends and etc. He laughs louder and said that
during past time with their friends, they get two empty cans, make a hole at
the center and then put there the rope to connect each other. It’s only
two-three m that you can hear the sound or the voice of the person. And in long
distance communication, they used telegram. But it was just only for a few
minutes you can have a conversations with your love one’s because it has an
expensive payment.
In their school related tasks they uses “Dictionary “Typewriter” and what make me more amazed and curious
is the “Stenography” is a
specially designed machine which is used for taking shorthand. Many court
reporters use stenograph machines to quickly and accurately record
testimony and the devices are also used by students to take notes, and closed
cautioners who want to be able to quickly write captions for live broadcasts. A
high quality stenograph machine is capable of networking with a computer and a
microphone array, and such machines can be extremely expensive. A special type of shorthand which operates
phonetically. This means that a stenographic transcript is actually unique to the person who generated it, as each
person hears and interprets sounds slightly differently. Typically, a
stenograph machine is used to transcribe information such as testimony, and
then the stenotype clerk reads over the transcript and generates a full version
which can be read by anyone.
